Move On
Cooling that heats the water, beneath the Duomo.

A full-inverter multi-purpose system, designed and built by us, that provides air conditioning, refrigeration and hot water through heat recovery. Replacing gas boilers and refrigeration units cooled with well water discharged into the sewer.

2.534 m³of well water no longer wasted every year
−55%gas in the winter months
100%hot water from heat recovery
>10 tless CO₂ every year
5inverter compressors

The challenge

A system that threw water away.

Before, there were gas boilers for heating and hot water and refrigeration units cooled with once-through well water: over two and a half million litres a year pumped, used once and discharged into the sewer.

The plant room is a basement in Piazza del Duomo, right in the historic centre: no cranes, narrow access, no visible machines. It needed a single system for air conditioning, food refrigeration and hot water that wasted no water and fitted through a door.

The solution

HPRU: one system, three services

Multi-purpose climate unit with its three compressors, in the workshop

Multi-purpose climate unit

Three inverter semi-hermetic compressors: chilled water from 4 to 15 °C and hot water from 35 to 60 °C, even at the same time. From 6.5 to 45 kW of cooling and up to 60 kW of heating.

The two refrigeration unit modules completed in the workshop

Refrigeration unit

Two inverter compressors for low- and medium-temperature cold rooms and counters, up to 9 kW at −30 °C, with active oil management.

Hot water tanks and manifolds in the plant room

Full heat recovery

The heat taken from cold rooms and counters no longer ends up in the well: it heats the domestic hot water. In winter it covers 100% of demand, with no burners or heating elements.

Outdoor exchanger hidden behind the grille of a historic window

Zero water wasted

Condensing is now air-cooled, with an outdoor exchanger hidden behind the grille of a historic window. The water circuit is closed.

3D model of the modular units

3D design · modular construction

Assembled twice

The units were built in modules in our workshop, where we assembled them and pressure-tested them to the PED directive. Then we took them apart, carried them across the square at dawn and reassembled them piece by piece in the basement.

Measured results

Less gas, no wasted water, free hot water

−2.597 Smcof gas over the four winter months compared with the year before: −55%.
22.400 kWhof heat a year for hot water, recovered from refrigeration.
4,5–5 TEPof primary energy saved every year.

We measure it, we don’t estimate it

Telemetry records consumption and efficiency every day: the figures on this page come from the system’s real data, not from data sheets.
